"Imagination is my nation, and that is where I want to live and die."
Guillermo Gómez-Peña
Why is imagination so important for us? In the lyric of my recent rap music video, Free Fish“es,”I demand migrants, who are symbolized as fish, to fly out of water. Of course I know that most fish can’t survive in the air. But imagining fish reaching to the sky can give feeling of emancipation to migrants. Against the idea that fish should stay only in the water, this imagination offers a sense of freedom for minorities and queers of all kinds in the trans-Pacific xenophobic societies. We, as women and queers of color, the marginalized, and hyphenated people whose bodies are alienated by the nationalist and heteronormative regimes, should learn to fully live in the imaginative space, to take shelters from the current and long-established sexist, racist, homophobic, and anti-immigrant social atmosphere. We will find our way to empower our bodies and souls to turn this phobic world into the place of possible living, a world where we are meant to live. With art, we will expand this imaginative territory of refuge to the actual institutions of the world.
