As an immigrant woman and an international student, HeeJung's video work and rapping question popular beliefs in the mother tongue—the language that we think we are born into—and demand the audience to critically recognize, instead of simply asking the "native" speakers for a generosity towards "foreign" languages and "broken" English"es" spoken by the English as Second Language (ESL), that there is always the very otherness rooted in every language, which many of us think as inherently ours. This recognition of the alien characteristics of languages—be they English, Korean, or Konglish, or Español, English, or Spanglish—is the true potential for empowering immigrants, women of color, and many hyphenated people who often sense that their own languages and bodies consistently alienate them, a quite natural feeling that only few privileged have the luxury to not know.
